What is Websense and why is it used?

Simply put, Websense is a software that blocks websites. Companies, schools and institutions use them to block access to websites they feel they users shouldn’t access. This is is done for several reasons e.g. to avoid employees wasting time browsing, avoiding access to adult websites at school, preventing getting viruses from malicious websites etc. All the above are valid reasons and you should know the risks when attempting to bypass Websense. However, I think that in many of the above cases, educating internet users should be the way to protect companies, schools, institutions. I really hate seeing, especially companies, blocking access to the internet as if employees will be working all the time they are in the office. There is no such thing. Eventually, employees will waste more time trying to find how to bypass this filter compared to the time they would waste visiting a website tat is blocked by Websense.

Websense works by categorizing web pages into a database. Then an administrator selects which categories to allow and which ones to block. For example, a little Websense software searches the internet everyday for new web sites. They find this website, bypass-websense.info, and categorize it as a “Proxy Avoidance” website. If your company, school, institution etc blocks this category (most likely), you won’t be able to view it.
